Panama Star PANAMA. Of Asian origins, flying kites has become a Panamanian tradition, with the help of the country’s strong winds which encouraged locals embrace them pastime, or sport, depending on your perspective For the Association of Chinese-Panamanian professionals (APROCHIPA), the country has been as welcoming to Chinese people as it has been to its traditions, leading them to organize a series of activities for Panamanian youth in gratitude to the country that has so warmly embraced them.

Among APROCHIPA’s staple events is an annual Kite Festival, which this year will be celebrated on March 22 in Amador (close to TGI Friday's) This year’s theme is the preservation of the environment, as organizers aim to promote healthy open-air activities.

The Kite Festival started in 2001 with the goal of preserving the Chinese tradition of kite-making. It is a competition that rewards originality, in design and appearance and the skill to fly a kite. Throughout the day, Chinese and Panamanian families come together to participate and enjoy the display of kites of different sizes and colors.

Those interested in participating this year can join the competition for free by calling 236-7355, or emailing actividades @aprochipa.org by Saturday March 14 at noon. The Festival will start at 2:00 p.m. and there will be food, drinks

Everyone is welcome to participate. There will be trophies and prizes for the winners. Most importantly, there will be tons of fun and community-building for everyone attending.
